The pond is believed to be the source of the Godavari River (the second longest in India!), and was built by Shrimant Sardar Raosaheb Parnerkar, a high-ranking official of the Indore state. A touching tribute to Parnarkar and his wife can be seen on the edge of the pot – a bust of the couple. Interestingly, the present temple structure is not original. The Mughal emperor Aurangzeb destroyed the earlier temple and the temple we see today was rebuilt (1740-1760) by Peshwa Balaji Baji Rao .
