Jogulamba Temple is situated in Alampur Mandal in the Indian state of Telangana. It is a Hindu temple dedicated to Goddess Jogulamba, the form of Shakti. This temple is one of the Maha Shakti Peethas. In Shaktism, the eighteen (ashtadasa) temples are regarded as the most significant shrines and sites of pilgrimage. Alampur is located close to the Krishna River’s confluence on the banks of the Tungabhadra River. Within the Navabrahma Temple complex is the Jogulamba Temple. The temple is a cluster of nine Shiva temples built in the seventh-eighth century CE.

The primary deities of the Jogulamba temple are Lord Shiva’s incarnation, Balabrahmeswara, and Jogulamba. Goddess Jogulamba is seated on a corpse in this temple, and a lizard, a frog, and a scorpion are perched atop her head. It is thought that the Telugu term Yogula Amma is the source of the word Jogulamba. The Government of India’s Prasad (Pilgrimage Revival Advancement Drive) project included the temple in 2019.

Location

Alampur is about 220 km south of Hyderabad and can be reached via the Hyderabad-Bangalore highway. The Jogulamba temple is also part of the Navabrahma temple complex, a group of nine temples dedicated to Lord Shiva, built by the Chalukyas of Badami in the seventh and eighth centuries.

History

The Jogulamba temple is considered to be the Shakti Peetha where the upper teeth of Sati Devi fell. The legend of Daksha Yajna and self-immolation of Sati Devi is the origin story of Shakti Peethas. The original temple was built in the seventh century CE. The Bahmani Sultans founded it in the year 1390 CE. According to legend, the Bahmani Sultan’s army was opposed by the army of Vijayanagara monarch Harihara Raya II, who also fortified the temple complex to fend off additional attacks.

According to him, the primary idol has been relocated to the Navabrahma temple complex’s Balabrahma temple. Since then the idol was enshrined in a secluded place in the Bala Brahma temple. The original idol was housed in the newly constructed Jogulamba temple, which was reconstructed on its original location in 2005.

In the fourteenth century, the Bahmani Sultans invaded and destroyed the temple. Nevertheless, Goddess Jogulamba and her Shakti forms Chandi and Mundi were hidden in the adjacent Bala Brahmeswara Swamy temple, even though the temple was devastated in this attack. From then till 2005, Ammavaru received Koluvai pooja in this same temple. In 2005, a new temple was built and the goddess was re-enthroned.

According to a popular legend, in the 6th century there was a great saint named Rasa Siddha, who had the power to turn base metal into gold, and who was considered a close associate of the Chalukya king Pulakesi II, who was instrumental in building any number of temples known as ‘Nava Brahmas’. According to Puranas, the nine names of Lord Shiva are actually the names of medicinal herbs prescribed by Rasa Siddha and there are nine temples here. Swarga Brahma Temple is what they are. The temples of Padma, Vishwa, Arka, Bala, Garuda, and Taraka are among the revered in Hindu sanctuaries.
