Rayara Math, popularly known as Sri Raghavendra Swamy Math. It was earlier known as Kumbakonam Math, Vibhudendra Math, Dakshina Math or Vijayendra Math or Susamindra Math. Sri Raghavendra Math is one of the Dvaita Vedanta mathas (monastery). As the descendant of Madhwacharya, Vibudhendra Tirtha (the pupil of Ramachandra Tirtha) Jayathirtha, and Sri Jayathirtha, it is one of the three principal monasteries. The remaining two are Uttaradi Math and Vyasaraja Math and are collectively referred to as Mathatraya. For centuries the principal designers of post-Madhva Dvaita Vedanta were the abbots and academics of Mattatraya.
Ramachandra Tirtha’s disciples were Vidyanidhi Tirtha and Vibhudendra Tirtha. Vibhudendra Tirtha established the Southern Math in Kumbakonam, whereas Vidyanidhi Tirtha carried on the Northern Math lineage. These lineages were formed and continued for the purpose of Madhva philosophy.
So that more people have access to philosophy and receive upadesha (spiritual guidance). Later this Math got the name Kumbhakona Math. It came to be known as Vijayendra Math after the famous Vijayendra Theertha period.
After the time of Sri Subodhendra Theertha (1799 – 1835) this Math was established in Nanjanagud, so it was also known as Nanjanagud Sri Raghavendra Swamy Math in later days. In recent decades, the Math established its headquarters in Mantralayam. It is the sacred residence of one of the great figures of the Madhvacharya dynasty, Sri Raghavendra Theertha (1621–1671).
History
The Raghavendra Mutt originated from Jagadguru Sri Madhwacharya through Vibhudendra Theertha and came into existence in the 15th century. In the fifteenth century, Vibhudendra Theertha established the Raghavendra Mutt in Kumbakonam. So, earlier this Math was known as Kumbakonam Math or Southern Math and later this Math was known as Sri Vijayendra Math after Vijayendra Tirtha by Sudhindra Tirtha who was disciple and successor of Kumbakonam Math. Sudhindra Tirtha was succeeded by his disciple, the highly revered Dvaita monk Raghavendra Tirtha, who continued in the pontifical lineage as head of the monastery.
Deities were worshipped
Moola Rama is the main deity of the Math. Along with Moola Rama, Sri Digvijaya Rama (worshipped by Sri Madhwacharya) and Jaya Rama (worshipped by Sri Jayathirtha) are worshiped at Sri Raghavendra Swamy Math. The Vitthals worshipped two Vyasamushtis, Sri Vibudhendra Tirtha and Santana Gopala Krishna, Vaikuntha Vasudeva, Sri Shodasa Bahu Narasimha, and other notable deities of great historical significance in the Math.
Purandara Dasa meaningfully explained the worship of Moolarama by his contemporary Yatiswara Srisurendratirtha. Sri Vijaya Das Moola wrote Suladi on Rama. Sri Gopala Dasa mentions Vasudhendratirtha eight times in Moolarama Suladi called ‘Taranikulotpanna Taputakanchanavarna’. Citing Moolaram, Sri Jagannatha Dasa composed kirtans on several Yathivarenyas of Sri Raghavendra Math. He also speaks of Sri Raghavendra Theertha, his cherished Guru. He also says that Vasudhendra Tirtha’s favorite deity is Moola Rama.
